Stone ruins of the abandoned Kuldhara village near Jaisalmer, lying silent in the desert for over 200 years.

For the last 200 years, a cursed village has been lying empty, but even today, footsteps can be heard in its ruins. About 14 km from Jaisalmer, there is a village called Kuldhara, which once belonged to the Paliwal Brahmins. A man named Kadhan used to live there.

But what happened that one night, 5,000 people suddenly left the village? Why, even after 200 years, has this village never been resettled?

Locals say there was a minister named Salim Singh who lived nearby. He liked the village chief’s daughter and gave a warning to the villagers — if they opposed him, he would increase taxes and destroy the whole village.

Historical painting or sketch of Salim Singh, the minister linked to Kuldhara’s tragic tale.

To save the girl’s honor and the lives of the villagers, the entire village left the place overnight and gave a curse — that anyone who tries to live here will never find happiness. Even today, people say that in the silence of the night, you can still hear footsteps in the ruins of Kuldhara.
