Main entrance of Lohagarh Fort in Bharatpur, built with massive stone walls

“Durg bharatpur adag jimi himgiri ki chattan, Surajmal ktez ko ab lo karat bakhaan.”

19 February 1733, Maharaja Surajmal started the construction of the Lohagarh Fort, which took around 8 years to complete. During its construction, tall and strong stone walls were built around all four sides of the fort.

The great historian James Todd believed that conquering Lohagarh Fort was like “Lohe k chane chabane jesa” — in other words, extremely difficult. At one corner of the fort, there is a tower called Jawahar Burj, which was built by Jat Maharaja Jawahar Singh after his victory over Delhi.

Historians say that Lord Lake attacked the fort 13 times because Maharaja Ranjit Singh had given refuge to Holkar ruler Jaswant Rao — and every time, the British were defeated. This event is also remembered in a popular folk song: “Gora hat ja re, raaj Bharatpur ko”. So, how did you like our content on Lohagarh Fort?
