Delicately crafted kaagzi pottery from Alwar – known for its lightness and fine detailing.

What do you think when you see this picture? Does it look like it’s from China or somewhere else? This is Blue Pottery, a special kind of art. It came to Rajasthan from Iran during the time of Emperor Akbar. First, it reached Lahore, and then came to Rajasthan. The person who brought it here was Raja Man Singh I from the Kachhwaha dynasty. When Blue Pottery came to Rajasthan, it slowly changed a bit in each place. It picked up the local styles and colours.

Handcrafted Jaipur Blue Pottery showcasing Persian-inspired floral patterns in cobalt blue and turquoise hues.

For example, in Jaipur, it is known as Blue Pottery. The black pottery style is known from Kota and Sawai Madhopur. The golden or sunehri pottery comes from Bikaner, the kaagzi (paper-thin) pottery from Alwar, and Pokhran pottery from Jaisalmer.

Blue Pottery is also called “Raees Pottery” because it’s generally quite expensive and rich-looking.

One of the most famous artists of Blue Pottery was Kripal Singh Shekhawat, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 and later honoured with the Shilp Guru award in 2000. His student, Gopal Singh ji, is still doing exceptional work in this craft today.
