Kaminey: The Story Behind the Story, Cajetan Boy and Vishal Bhardwaj

What if the idea for one of Bollywood’s most unusual crime films came from a Kenyan writer, was discovered at a writing workshop, and was later turned into a Hindi film by Vishal Bhardwaj?

That is the story behind Kaminey.

Released in 2009, Kaminey is remembered for Shahid Kapoor playing two very different twin brothers, Priyanka Chopra’s outspoken Sweety, Vishal Bhardwaj’s dark treatment and songs like “Dhan Te Nan.” But there is another interesting part of the film’s history. The starting point of the story came from Kenyan writer Cajetan Boy.

Bhardwaj came across Boy’s script at a scriptwriting workshop conducted by Mira Nair. He liked the idea, eventually bought the rights and then worked with other writers to turn it into the film audiences saw.

So, where did Kaminey really begin?

The Original Idea Came From Cajetan Boy

The story begins in 2005, at a scriptwriting workshop held by filmmaker Mira Nair.

Cajetan Boy, a Kenyan writer from Nairobi, was working on a story about twin brothers living in a tough urban environment. The original script followed the brothers and the events that unfolded around them over a short period of time.

Boy showed the script to Vishal Bhardwaj during the workshop.

Bhardwaj liked the basic idea. He and Mira Nair discussed it, and the material was seen as something that could potentially work as a commercial Indian film. Boy later sent Bhardwaj another draft of the script.

The film, however, did not happen immediately.

A few years passed before Bhardwaj decided to acquire the idea. He eventually bought the script from Boy and began developing it for Indian audiences.

According to accounts of the film’s development, Bhardwaj paid US$4,000 for the idea. He then changed a large part of the original material and gave it a darker tone, adding Bollywood elements and developing the story with Sabrina Dhawan, Abhishek Chaubey and Supratik Sen.

This is where the story of Kaminey becomes especially interesting.

The basic idea came from Boy, but the screenplay that emerged was heavily reworked.

How the Story Became Kaminey

Vishal Bhardwaj did not simply take Boy’s script and film it.

He went back to the material and changed it substantially.

The original concept centred on twin brothers and the events surrounding them. Bhardwaj developed that foundation into a crime story involving drugs, money, violence, politics and the Mumbai underworld.

He also brought a more serious and darker tone to the material.

Bhardwaj later explained that writing Kaminey was harder than he had expected. The story had a large number of characters, and the screenplay had to keep moving between them without spending too much time explaining each person.

That was one of the film’s challenges.

There were many characters, several storylines and a number of events taking place around the same time. The screenplay had to connect these different pieces while still keeping the two brothers at the centre.

The final writing credits went to Cajetan Boy, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Chaubey, Sabrina Dhawan and Vishal Bhardwaj. Bhardwaj also wrote the dialogue and directed the film.

Shahid Kapoor Became Two Brothers

Once the story had taken shape, the next major decision was casting.

Shahid Kapoor was chosen to play the twin brothers, Guddu and Charlie.

This was Shahid’s first double role in a film.

The interesting part was that Guddu and Charlie were not written as two versions of the same person.

They were very different.

Guddu is more straightforward and wants a stable life. Charlie is involved in crime and is interested in making quick money. Their personalities, speech patterns and physical mannerisms are different.

Guddu stammers, while Charlie has a lisp. Shahid had to make those differences believable without making either character feel like a caricature.

In an interview around the film’s release, Shahid talked about the difficulty of playing both characters. Some scenes required him to perform as both brothers, which meant the two sides of the scene had to be carefully planned and shot.

The result is a film where the audience can usually tell who is Guddu and who is Charlie even though both characters have the same face.

That distinction was essential to the story.

Who Are Guddu and Charlie?

Guddu and Charlie are identical twins, but they have taken very different paths.

Guddu wants a relatively normal life. He works and falls in love with Sweety, played by Priyanka Chopra.

Charlie, meanwhile, operates in a much rougher world. He is involved in gambling and crime and wants to make enough money to move up in that world.

The two brothers do not have a close relationship.

They have spent much of their lives going in different directions, and neither seems particularly interested in fixing that relationship.

Then circumstances force their worlds to collide.

That is when the story starts moving quickly.

Drugs, money, criminals and political connections bring different characters together. A problem that begins with one person quickly affects someone else, and the two brothers eventually become caught in the same chain of events.

The film takes place over a tightly packed period, which gives the story its fast pace.

Priyanka Chopra’s Sweety

Priyanka Chopra played Sweety, Guddu’s love interest.

But Sweety is not written as a conventional Bollywood romantic heroine.

She is loud, direct and confident. She is also connected to the political world that becomes an important part of the story.

In contemporary interviews, Chopra described Sweety as a Marathi woman and spoke about having to bring Marathi speech into the character.

Her character also gives the film some of its humour and energy.

Guddu and Sweety’s relationship provides a different side of the story. While the brothers are caught up in crime and danger, their relationship gives Guddu a personal reason to want a different life.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Dark Treatment

By the time Kaminey reached the screen, the original idea had gone through several changes.

Bhardwaj’s version was darker and more closely tied to the kind of crime stories he wanted to make.

The film mixes violence, humour, romance and crime. There are criminals, corrupt politicians, drugs, guns and characters who are constantly trying to get something from someone else.

Bhardwaj himself described the writing process as difficult because there were so many characters and storylines to manage. He also said that Bollywood elements such as romance, songs and dances had to be incorporated into the film.

That combination is important to understanding Kaminey.

It is a crime film, but it is still a Hindi film with songs, romance and larger-than-life characters.

Bhardwaj had to find a way to make those elements exist together.

The Famous “Dhan Te Nan”

The music became another major part of Kaminey.

Vishal Bhardwaj composed the soundtrack, while Gulzar wrote the lyrics. The song “Dhan Te Nan” became closely associated with the film even before its release.

The song fits the film’s restless energy.

It is loud, fast and slightly chaotic, which is very close to the world Charlie inhabits.

The music also helped the film retain its Bollywood identity despite its crime-heavy story.

The Film Was Different for Shahid Kapoor

Before Kaminey, Shahid Kapoor was strongly associated with romantic and lighter roles.

With Guddu and Charlie, he had to move into a much rougher kind of performance.

The two characters were physically similar but emotionally different. One wanted stability. The other was comfortable around crime and wanted money.

Years later, when Kaminey completed 12 years, Shahid described the film as a project that allowed him to move away from the familiar “good guy” image associated with some of his earlier work.

That makes the film interesting when looking at Shahid’s career as well.

It was his first double role, but the challenge was bigger than simply playing twins.

He had to make two characters with the same face feel like two separate people.

The Part Most People Don’t Know

The most unusual fact about Kaminey is that Vishal Bhardwaj was not the person who originally came up with the story.

Cajetan Boy was.

Boy was a Kenyan writer from Nairobi who brought his script to a workshop conducted by Mira Nair. Bhardwaj heard the story there, liked the idea, and eventually bought it.

After that, the material changed considerably.

Bhardwaj worked on it with Sabrina Dhawan, Abhishek Chaubey and Supratik Sen. The story was adapted for an Indian setting, the tone became darker and more commercial elements were added.

The finished film was therefore the result of several stages of writing.

The original concept came from Boy.

The screenplay was developed by a larger writing team.

Bhardwaj directed the final film and also wrote its dialogue.

That distinction is worth remembering when talking about where Kaminey came from.

Why Kaminey Still Makes for an Interesting Story

The story behind Kaminey is a reminder that a film’s journey can start long before its director, actors and production team come together.

In this case, it started with a Kenyan writer and a scriptwriting workshop.

Cajetan Boy had the original idea about twin brothers. Vishal Bhardwaj encountered that idea through Mira Nair’s workshop, later bought the rights and developed it with other writers.

The result was a 2009 Hindi film starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, with Bhardwaj behind the camera.

And Shahid Kapoor’s double role gave the story its central performance challenge.

Guddu and Charlie share a face, but almost everything else about them is different. Their choices put them on different paths, until circumstances force those paths to cross.

The film may carry Vishal Bhardwaj’s name as its director, but the story began somewhere else.
