Bharatmala Pariyojana: Transforming India’s Highway Network and Connectivity

“The road has come, but the entire village has already moved to the city.”

For years, this line represented one of the major challenges facing rural India. Roads were being built, but people continued moving towards cities in search of better jobs, markets, education, and opportunities. Today, however, India’s growing highway infrastructure is gradually changing this picture.

When a developing country moves towards becoming a developed economy, infrastructure plays a crucial role. Among the most important components of infrastructure are roads, highways, and connectivity. This is where the Bharatmala Pariyojana has emerged as one of India’s major road infrastructure initiatives.

Bharatmala Pariyojana and India’s Highway Development

The Bharatmala Pariyojana was approved by the Government of India in October 2017 with the objective of improving road connectivity across the country. Instead of focusing only on individual highways, the programme aims to develop a connected network of economic corridors, expressways, feeder roads, border roads, and routes linking important ports and industrial areas.

Under Phase-I, approximately 24,800 kilometres of highways were planned. The programme is designed to improve connectivity between major economic centres and make the movement of passengers and goods faster and more efficient.

According to government data, 22,590 kilometres of roads under Bharatmala had been completed by March 31, 2026, demonstrating the scale at which India’s highway infrastructure is expanding.

The importance of Bharatmala goes beyond road construction. Better highways can improve logistics efficiency, reduce travel time, strengthen supply chains, improve access to markets, and support industrial and tourism growth.

For farmers, improved roads can provide better access to larger markets. For industries, faster highways can simplify the transportation of raw materials and finished products. For tourists, improved connectivity can make destinations across different regions easier to reach.

Bharatmala Pariyojana in Rajasthan

Rajasthan has a strategically important position in India’s road infrastructure network because of its location in western and northern India. Several major highway and expressway corridors pass through the state, strengthening its connection with major cities, industrial centres, and ports.

Major projects associated with Rajasthan include the Delhi–Vadodara Greenfield Expressway and the Amritsar–Jamnagar Economic Corridor, among other important highway developments.

These corridors are helping connect Rajasthan’s districts with wider national markets and improving the movement of goods across the country.

The larger objective of Bharatmala Pariyojana is therefore not simply to build more roads. It is to create a faster, better-connected and more efficient transportation network for India.
